Children who are learning to read benefit from books with predictable
text. The following ideas are designed especially for them.
Photo Identification Book: This homemade book is modeled after the children's book, Brown Bear, Brown, Bear, What Do You See? by Bill Martin, Jr. (Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 1967, 1983.) In this pattern book, the child quickly learns to anticipate what is on the next page: "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you See? I see a redbird looking at me. Redbird, redbird, What do you see? I see a yellow duck looking at me." This pattern of repetition continues as each page introduces another animal. A pattern book may be made in a similar manner. Purchase a small (4x6" or 3x5"), inexpensive photo book. (You can usually find them for only a couple of dollars. I found mine at a garage sale. Gotta love those garage sales!) Take pictures of people in their various roles at church: pastor, Sunday School teacher, greeter, chorister, organist, etc. . . If possible, take action photos: a greeter shaking hands, the pastor preaching, the chorister leading singing, etc. . . Put one photo on each page along with brief text. For example, you might begin with a Pastor: "Pastor, Pastor, what do you see? I see Brandon's teacher looking at me. (Picture of pastor on this page.) Brenda (his teacher), Brenda, what do you see? I see the chorister looking at me." (Picture of Brenda on this page.)" During church the child can look through the book and begin to make connections to people and their various roles in the congregation. Alternately, my children made a book that showed all their friends. They used studio pictures given to them by friends. |
